Before it was the Crystal Palace, that third floor area was the waiting room in front of the returns and complaints counter. Too many people were spending time there, so they took out the chairs and put in an ice cream parlor.

Gosh! How well I remember the Crystal Palace indeed. I remember going there twice in 1974 and 1975 but I never thought I would work there. But as it turned out I worked there from 1975 until around 1980. I can't read the ad, but if it appeared in the New Yorker it was published in early 1976. Working for Field's (as it is true in working for anyone) is not quite the same as being served as a customer by them, but I usually enjoyed my job. Gosh, how much more I enjoy thinking about the old waning days of glorious Marshall Field's and the days of my youth. Things really WERE a lot better back then!

Hi Leslie,

I love Marshall Fields and actively boycott Macy's. That's why I felt guilty on my last trip to Chicago when I snuck in and bought some Frango mints.

Can't wait for your MF book. My mom grew up in a small town outside of Chicago and each year, her mother took her in for a shopping trip to Fields. Of course, it included lunch in the Walnut Room.

In the 70s, my mom took me on a similar trip and I still have great memories of that day. We also still have an old 1940s Uncle Mistletoe doll. It's pretty beat up, but it's a priceless family heirloom.

Here's another one: the third floor waiting room with its rows and rows of wooden benches where shoppers could rest their weary legs for a while before continuing. The room also featured telephone books from cities all over the U.S., so valuable when you needed to look up a telephone number (or address) from someone in another city. Most people were listed at that time.
